About the map
The tropical seas, reefs, and islands of Southeast Asia, at the crossroads of the Indian and Pacific oceans, have the greatest marine biodiversity of anywhere on Earth. This map explores the physical geography of this fecund but now threatened region.
I produced the Island Southeat Asia map from a blend of sources. Base map elements, including coasts, rivers, lakes, mountains, country borders, and populated places derive from Natural Earth v. 6.0. Elevation zone colors were generated from 605m Mapzen elevation data. Ocean bathymetry derives from a 2024 GEBCO grid. The coral reefs are from a World Resources Institute dataset. I used Eduard software to render both the oceanic and terrestrial shaded relief in a hand-drawn style. Physical feature name references included various print atlases, online maps, and Wikipedia.
