Artists and the lands under US National Park Service stewardship have had a long association. There is perhaps no better example of this than the park panoramas painted by Austrian, Heinrich Berann (1915-1999), including North Cascades (1987), Yosemite (1989), Yellowstone (1991), and Denali (1994).

During his 50-year career, Berann painted more than 500 panoramas. He was near the end of his career and at the height of his artistic abilities when the NPS commissioned him to do these four parks. He retired in 1994 after painting Denali, the highest peak in North America—a fitting magnum opus to a prolific career.

The digital versions available below were carefully reproduced to accurately capture the vibrant colors favored by Berann. The original pieces are stored in a climate-controlled facility near Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
